Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier
Dimple Lala is "not quite Indian, not quite American"- too Indian for her American classmates yet too American for her Indian family. Dimple has spent the first seventeen years of her life fighting against her parents traditions and wishing she was more like her beautiful, outgoing blue-eyed, blonde best friend Gwyn. When her parents arrange a meeting for Dimple with Karsh, a suitable Indian boy, Dimple resists the Indian match-making tradition. Gwyn, however, sets her eyes on Karsh and sets out to become the Indian girl of his dream- leaving Dimple to watch as Gwyn takes over her culture, her family, and even the guy she likes.
Definitely not a book to pick up if you're looking for a light-hearted, quick read. A monsterous 500 pages, this book is slow going and full of depth and great teen angst. Readers will be cheering for Dimple as she tries to find her place within her family and the rest of the world.
