Wild Roses by Deb Caletti
Seventeen-year-old Cassie Morgan will never have a normal life due to her famous step-father, violinist Dino Cavalli. Dino's arrogance, self-centeredness and volitile behavior causes extreme stress in Cassie's life. Things only get worse, however, as Dino prepares for his huge comeback concert and stops taking his anti-depressants. When Ian Waters, a promising young musican begins to take lessons from Dino, Cassie falls in love despite all her efforts to the contrary and her belief that love only brings about pain. Cassie will be a character that a lot of readers will be able to relate to- her emotions regarding her divorced parents and her mother's remarriage to Dino (who Cassie dispises) are realistic and honest as is her fear of love and the turmoil of her relationship with Ian. Would be an interesting choice for a mother-daughter book discussion.
