The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart
High school sophomore Frankie Landau-Banks is tired of being underestimated. After she develops a more womanly figure over the summer, Frankie attracts the attention of Matthew, a popular upperclassman. When Frankie discovers that Matthew belongs to the all-male secret society, The Loyal Order of the Basset Hounds, she becomes determined to infiltrate the club. She manipulates the members of the Order into upping the ante of their traditional pranks orchestrating pranks that make political statements, which are generally lost on the student body. While she hopes that Matthew will be impressed as much by her intelligence as he is her appearance, she quickly learns that the boys of her elite private school do not appreciate deception.
Lockhart breaks from her typical light-hearted chick lit with strong feminist coming-of-age story. Frankie is intelligent and competitive, yet can be insecure particularly when she feels excluded by her boyfriend. A very literary novel, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks is sure to appeal to fans of John Green’s novels.
