Breathless by Lurlene McDaniel
Travis Morrison is a risk-taker, a trait required to become a champion diver. His high-risk behavior, ultimately lands him in the hospital after a cliff diving accident in which he broke his leg. While in the hospital, Travis learns that he has bone cancer and as part of the treatment, doctors will have to amputate his leg. As Travis becomes sicker, he becomes determined to die on his own terms and in his own way, not as dictated by his disease.
McDaniel has written another short novel that packs an emotional punch while tackling a controversial issue. Rotating perspectives among four teens: Travis, his young sister Emily, his best friend Cooper, and his girlfriend Darla, presents a variety of perspectives on the issue. Each character has a unique voice and perspective on Travis’ life and decision. The short story could not be packed with anymore teen angst or drama- Cooper’s mother is an alcoholic prostitute, Darla is labeled the school slut, Emily and Cooper each secretly harbor feelings for the other, in addition to Travis’ struggles with his illness, losing a limb, and his inability to become a champion diver. Fans of McDaniel will devour this quick read, tissue in hand. Ultimately, readers are left not-knowing who ultimately fulfilled Travis’ wishes, an ending that makes the story all the more meaningful.
