Does My Head Look Big In This? by Randa Abdel-Farrah
Amal has made the decision to wear the hijab, the traditional Muslim headscarf, fulltime as a testament to her faith. Amal realizes that this is a decision that she cannot take lightly and she worries about the reactions of her parents, friends, and classmates. Amal realizes that she will face discrimination, particularly at her elite private school, but she remains determined with the support of her parents and friends.
Amal is a likeable protagonist with a fresh and funny voice and many girls will be able to relate to her. Amal's friends are well developed and likeable, while her enemy is slightly stereotypical. Despite tackling some serious issues, the story remains primarily light-hearted and funny and refrains from being preachy.
