Anyone But You by Lara M. Zeises
Fifteen-year-old Seattle has been raised by his father's ex-girlfriend Layla ever since he left town. Layla's two sons are just like brothers to Seattle, especially seventeen-year-old Critter. Seattle and Critter have found themselves headed for summer school, so they are unable to work like their brother Jesse, and they don't want to study like Layla wants them to do. It's too hot to skate, so Seattle convinces Critter to hit on the lifeguard at a nearby pool so that they can go swimming. Soon Critter is infatuated with the lifeguard, while Seattle is falling for a visiting skaterboy but at the same time they are dealing with their complicated feelings toward each other. Life gets even crazier when Seattle's father returns unexpectedly. A very realistic portrayal of an atypical family. Told in chapters alternating narration between Seattle and Critter, who are brutally honest in their language, descriptions of what's happening around them, and in their opinions. Readers will be immediately drawn into their lives, feeling their pain and angst. While Seattle's reunion with her father feels somewhat forced and resolves a bit to easily- but Seattle's response to her father is very real.
