Belle and the Beau by Beverly Jenkins
Belle Palmer has just escaped to the north and is lost and alone having been seperated from her father. Fortunately, she is found by Daniel Best and is taken in by his family, a free Black family living in Michigan. Daniel's mother is a former run-away slave and takes Belle in as another daughter. The family teaches Belle all about the freedom movement, the underground railroad, and even teaches her to read. Even though Daniel is promised to another woman, sparks between Belle and Daniel ignite.
Great, sweet romance. Lots of wonderful and more importantly accurate
historical details. Plot is pretty typical for a romance novel, but fans of
romances would expect nothing less! The characters are well developed and interesting, especially several secondary characters.
