Rainbow Party by Paul Ruditis
Promiscuous sophomore Gin is throwing a Rainbow Party, where each girl puts on a different color lipstick, the guys drop their pants, and in theory the boys would be left with rainbows around their penises. The story follows each of the teens invited to the party in the hours before they're expected at the party
Given the controversy that is currently surrounding this book, I felt that I needed to read it and form my own opinion. I have to say that this book is not worth the attention that it is getting. The characters are very stereotypical, unrealistic and poorly developed- there are so many that it is hard to keep track of them all. The dialog is boring- which is bad because most of the story is dialog. The safe sex and STD lectures with the health teacher feel forced- especially given the premise of the book and the fact that a large group of the sophomore class ends up with an STD. The ending is predictible, and at least this reader was glad it was over.
