Shattering Glass by Gail Giles
Rob Haynes with his good looks and seemingly unshakable confidence has become the alpha male at B'vale High School. In order to completely alienate reigning popularity king Lance and gain complete control of the school, Rob decides to transform school geek Simon into Mr. Popularity. With the help of friends, Young, Bob, and Coop, Rob begins his quest to transform Simon into Class Favorite. Each boy struggles with demons in their own lives and eventually culminates in a power struggle that has tragic results.
Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers
This was my favorite of all of Gile's books that I've read- but that could be because the ending has the most resolution. Quotes beginning each chapter reveals the tragedy that occurs at the end and also places the characters in the future so readers are not left wondering what happened to them. The characters are each haunted with tragedies that does not excuse their actions, but gives readers some indication of why the actions occured.
